Oaxaca—often called the birdiest state in Mexico—boasts an extraordinary diversity of habitats and elevations, making it the richest region in the country for bird species. This thoughtfully crafted tour explores one of the most productive thirds of the state, offering access to a dazzling variety of ecosystems within a compact and accessible route.
Over twelve days, you’ll travel through five of Oaxaca’s premier birding regions: the Valley of Oaxaca, the Sierra Juárez, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the Southern Sierra, and the Pacific Coast. Each setting brings its own suite of regional and endemic birds, from Red Warblers in the highland pines to Blue Mockingbirds in the oak scrub, and Pink-footed Shearwaters and Black Storm-Petrels along the coast. Along the way, you’ll visit three culturally rich cities—Oaxaca, Tehuantepec, and Huatulco—with a tranquil overnight in forest cabins in the Southern Sierra.
Beyond birds, this journey invites you to experience the richness of Oaxacan culture. You’ll visit the archaeological site of Monte Albán and the weaving village of Teotitlán del Valle, and savor the region’s world-famous cuisine—including its seven distinct varieties of traditional mole. With exceptional birding, unforgettable landscapes, and deep cultural flavor, this tour offers an experience as rich and layered as Oaxaca itself.
